Rainy Day Makeup

My makeup routine is fairly simple- yet when the weather hits, most of the time I just want to grab a blanket and stay snuggled up in bed. However, there are times where I have to leave the house in a somewhat presentable manner.  For rainy days, I like to keep my makeup simple and subtle. This is what I use.

I always start with the base of my skin and work my way out.....starting with my lotion.
  • I love this Yes to Tomatoes repairing acne lotion. It is a great base for my T-zone and helps prevent blemishes.
  • After this dries, I add my cult classic Oil of Olay (with SPF 15- not pictured) on top. I have been using this lotion on my face since my teen years and it has proven to be a staple in my skincare routine.
  • Next, is the CoverGirl/Oil of Olay Tone Rehab 2-in-1 Foundation. This is my miracle worker. It spreads easily (i use my fingers) and covers blemishes, skincolor variations and smooths problematic skin areas. It really is a great miracle worker- especially in a pinch!
  • If I am not using my CoverGirl/Olay foundation, then I use my Bare Minerals powders. The price is no laughing matter but I have never found a better base of makeup in my life. It is worth EVERY SINGLE penny. This stuff was a miracle worker on my face during outbreaks in college. I will never use any other powder for my skin. I never break out when I use this product alone.
  • For my cheeks, I use ULTA's Cheek Color. It is a budget fix that works just as well as name brand products with just as much pigment.
  • For a bit of eye pop, I line my eyes with NYC Kohl Liner. These budget-friendly eyeliners pack a punch for very little money.
  • Finishing the routine, I use CoverGirl's Professional Super Thick Lash Mascara. I could use a waterproof mascara but this formula makes my lashes look fantastic. If you want a good waterproof mascara, stick with the classic Maybelline.
And there you have it! Budget beauty buys that work in windy/rainy weather days. Remember, beauty does not have to break the bank!

DIY Earrings

I came across this pair of earrings on Pinterest and I figured I could make my own...and I did!
It was super easy to make and the best part is that I had everything I needed on hand (easily purchased at a craft store like Michael's).
  • Aventurine Beads - I used three different sizes ( one lg, 2 med, and 3 smalls per earring)
  • Oval Chain - silver (any will do- depending on the style you want)
  • earring hooks
  • Head pins - you will use these to connect the beads to the chain.
Insert one bead onto a head pin. Using the round nose pliers, bend the head pin at a 45° angle. Using the side cutters, trim the edge to about ¼". Using the round nose pliers, make a simple loop to secure the bead. This creates the mini charm.

Making the color bead dangles:Using the side cutters, trim the edge to about ¼". Using the round nose pliers, make a simple loop to secure the bead onto the chain. I used one bead per link in the chain.

Attach the rectangular bead to the fish hook ear wire. Repeat steps to complete earring set.

Easy and Cheap DIY Christmas Gifts

For those who are feeling the holiday pinch, there are so many great DIY gifts that would be pefect for most people on your list this holiday season.

One of the easiest (and cheapest) gifts I have found is this super easy lipgloss. All you need is vaseline and lipstick/pink lemonade mix.

What about something a bit more simple - non gender specific? I found these super cute thrifted glassware candles DIY and knew that was too easy and simple to not make. Depending on the type of glassware you use, you can make this easily for any guy on your list. Just hop on over to your local Goodwill store and snag some glassware - that is, if you do not have any spare around the house. Just get some wicks and candle wax and next thing you know, you have a super cute candle. *Note: add a few essential oils for a light scent*.

What about something everyone likes - homemade goodies?? Well, these are super easy to do. Just find some cheap dollar store tins, a bit of spray paint and fill each of these tins with your own homemade sweets. Cannot find your own, follow me on pinterest and I have a ton on my Foodie board.
What about that grill guy on your list who is going through withdrawls from not being able to grill out in this chillier season? Why not give him a goodie basket with some grill themed items. Easily found at a variety of stores, you can add BBQ Sauce, Rubs, Tongs, Themometer, etc. to fill his grilling needs. (These also make great Father's Day gifts too!)
Some of my favorite gifts are ones that are personalized yet simple. What about a pampering in a jar for those on your list that like to ensure they look their best year-round. This can easily be personalized for age or gender. For men, you can add mini colognes, manicure sets, and small body washes and hair gels. For little girls, add some sparkly press-on nails, hello kitty socks, small nail polishes, etc. for them.
Remember, that any gift can be pefect- no matter the amount of money spent on it. Just make sure it comes from the heart. Happy Holidays!

Easy and Cheap Recipes: Chocolate Croissants

A couple of days ago I was having a serious hunger for dessert - specifically chocolate. Ever have one of those? I find myself having that desire for a sweet treat and without anything easy to grab, I figured I would make something super easy and quick - that I know would not cost me a lot to replace the items I had intended on for other meals.

Chocolate Croissants
All you need is the following:
1 package of canned crescent rolls
1 C chocolate chips
1 egg
Assembled
Preheat oven to 425 and beat the egg into a small bowl.
Open the crescent rolls, unwrap- with the larger section facing you. Place a small amount of chocolate chips onto the larger section of the roll and begin wrapping - with each layer adding a few chips as you roll.  Roll all rolls and place on baking sheet. Brush the egg onto the croissant (this will give it that warm brown look on top). Place in oven for about 12 mins or until light golden brown.
If you have remaning chocolate chips, you can microwave them in a small bowl and drizzle it on top of the finished product. Done! Don't they look amazing? They are so delicious - and they go perfectly with a large glass of milk.

Enjoy!!

Easy and Cheap Recipes: Buffalo Chicken Garbage Bread

Trying my first cake pop - birthday cake- before my upcoming birthday
I am a huge foodie and I really love making my own dishes - especially if I don't have to spill a lot of beans to make it. Luckily, I have come across so many amazing dishes that are easy to put together on a dime- that I have to share it for some other budget-conscious cooks out there. So, here is one I put together this week. Enjoy!

Buffalo Chicken Garbage Bread
All you need is the following:
2 boneless chicken breasts
1 tsp. olive oil
1 pizza dough (I used canned)
3 oz. of shredded mozzarella cheese
8 oz. of shredded cheddar cheese
1 Tbsp. of Franks Wing Sauce - use less if you do not want it really spicy
1/3 cup of ranch or blue cheese dressing
Ingredients
Preheat oven to 425°.
Pre cook the two chicken breasts and cut into cubes (I boiled mine with salt and EVOO). Sprinkle with salt and pepper. (For spicer dishes, pan-sear chicken in 1/2 C Frank's Hot Sauce and 1/2 of the ranch/blue cheese mixture for extra coating)
On a well floured surface, spread pizza dough out completely flat. Rub the olive oil on the top of the dough, covering it completly. Mix the wing sauce and ranch/blue cheese mixture and brush on top of the oil/dough. Place the chicken (once cooled) on top of the sauce mixture. Add a pinch of salt and pepper to the mix. Next, spread the shredded cheese on top of the chicken.
Now, roll the dough, starting at one end, and rolling it into a pinwheel until the dough forms looks like a loaf of bread. Tuck the ends of the dough into the center- to ensure the sauce/chicken does not fall out during baking.
in the oven
Place the garbage bread onto a baking sheet (make sure you have sprayed with non-stick spray beforehand) and place in the oven for 20-25 mins or until light golden brown.
After!
Once it is out of the oven, cut into quarters and serve!
It is a bit squished (due to cutting) but it is amazing!! I hope you enjoy this. I have more amazing recipes to put up here so stay tuned!

However, if you do not have an account with them, do not fret. We are posting our clues here as well! **And, if you follow our blog and leave a comment, we will include for you some additional clues to assist you in your search.

Letterboxing Party

I told you guys in my post last week that we were going to place our first letterbox locally. Unfortunately, due to the weather- mostly Hurricane Sandy- it really prevented us from going and venturing out so far. So, instead, we decided to hit up Michael's for goodies to the other letterboxes we plan on placing around RVA. We will plant our first letterbox this weekend, if the weather cooperates!
Our goodies!
As you can see we picked up a lot of goodies (including some items for later boxes). Luckily, we did not have to spend a great deal of money. Anyone that letterboxes can tell you the supplies are rather inexpensive and the hobby is rather easy to pick up. Seriously, we spent $10 total to get the stamps, inkpad, notebooks and containers. Most items were either on clearance or $1, so we did not splurge on anything fancy. Some letterboxers truly get into stamp making and carve their own stamps out of erasers or any other type of material in order to get their perfect stamp. But, you do not have to unless you want to put that extra bit of love into your own box/stamp set.
"Fall Celebration" theme
We decided to make two boxes in addition to our other box -to create three different type of levels of letterboxers. This will be our expert level box- it will be the most difficult of the three to complete the clues and find. I am so excited to place this one. Each of the three items deals with fall - not just one of my favorite seasons of the year but also the time of year I was born, so I truly look foward to placing this one. *Hint: this will be placed at a local park*
"Cookie Monster" theme
This one, however, makes me laugh and I really did love finding items for this letterbox. This will be our super easy find and super easy for kids to enjoy finding as well. This will be a fun scavenger hunt-type of box. One of the reasons we picked out cookie monster is the fact we have both been called that nickname by our co-workers so it adds a bit about us into the letterbox- which we love.

I look forward to having these letterboxes found. If you have stumbled across my blog as a result of finding one of the letterboxes, please comment and let me know!

Creating our First Letterbox

Since we have been letterboxing a little over a year now, we decided it would be best to finally create one of our own and plant the box in our area. The great thing about letterboxing is that you can create your box and make it your own - even without spending a lot of money.
Via my Instagram
For our letterbox, we chose a cheap tupperware container from the dollar store that would not only seal well but was small enough to be hidden easily- we are going to place it in a large sealable ziploc bag just incase when we go to plant it. The stickers on our letterbox are from a scrapbooking set - since we had that, it was FREE. For our stamp, ink and notepad, we choose items from Michael's (each for $1). Total box cost = $4.

I am excited that this weekend we are going to hide our letterbox. If you are in the area, you can find it by going to Atlas Quest - and searching for us (our username: FrogLegsAndBaconStrips). Once we have planted our box, we will post it on the site. If you are new to letterboxing and want to find out more information on letterboxing and to see if any boxes are planted in your area, visit LbNA for more.

**Side note: This is a great hobby that the whole family can enjoy. I know quite a few families that participate in this on their weekends and vacations.

A bit of "ME" time

via Etsy
Since the man will be going back to his home state to visit his family for a couple of days, I am taking this week to focus more on "ME"....getting back to relaxing, trying something new for myself I would not typically get to with him at home, and stepping back from life to breathe! This is what I have been doing....

1. Take time to enjoy life, even the smaller parts. Taking time to "stop and smell the roses" is my focus. I cannot remember the last time I slowed down from the hustle and bustle to stop and enjoy the small things in life. And, to me, life is a whole lot of great little things.
via 10,000 Blessings
"Drink your tea slowly and reverently, as if this activity is the axis on which the whole earth revolves. Live the moment. Only this actual moment is life."
-Thich Nhat Hanh

2. Try a minimalist approach. Why am I a clutter bug? I am not a big fan of having a mess, but I allow it to overwhelm me. Instead, it is time to clean up my home. Take out the mess and leave myself with a much more organized space.
Via Houzz
Okay....well, that may be too minimalists, but you get the idea.

3. Make some of those DIY projects on my list. This is what I am most excited about. Crossing off things on my to-do bucket DIY list. I have so many projects I have wanted to do. Now, I have some down time to do them.

What do you do when you find yourself having a block of time to yourself? What do you enjoy doing?

Friday Inspiration: DIY Project Love

This Friday, my friends, I am feeling very inspired by all the wonderful new DIY projects I have stumbled across. For a few beans, you can make some really amazing gems. Here are a few of my favorite.
Via What Hopes and Dreams are Made of
What a super fun DIY idea, either for a newlywed couple or for yourself and special someone. It is super easy...just a few markers, cheap mugs and an oven. And you have the cutest gift...that you don't have to spend $30 on!
Via West Elm
I really love this ottoman, but why go to a big ticket store and spend $400, when you can DIY. All you need is a wooden pallet (free if you find one), filler foam, table legs, chevron fabric and a staple gun.
Via Something Like That
How super cute is this throw pillow?? All this DIY'er used is polyester fiberfill, a seam ripper and a placemat from Target for $3. I really love the design and the color. What a super cool idea. Most pillows can cost about $20-$30, so this is a steal!
Via CrafyNest
I am a HUGE fan of these adorable lanterns. With just a few items, you can transform a plain paper lantern into a masterpiece. How adorable would these be in a nursery or reading nook? Just a bit of whimsy fun in your home.

Have you found any DIY projects you just absolutely adore? What are you working on? I always love to see how other people transform items. Show me your best DIY project.

Back to School

It is that time of year to enjoy the stores bringing out the newest school supplies for the upcoming year. This was always one of my favorite times of the year. It felt like Christmas had come early. I was always facinated with getting new pencils and clothes for the year. What an exciting time in a kids life. Now, I share with you some of my favorite back to school projects for those who know someone returning to the books.
Via PolkaDotChair
What a great idea for a new teacher. What teacher would not like a fun addition to their classroom door than a fun ruler wreath. (And, I am sure brownie points will not hurt early on) A great, and super easy gift. I'm sure you could find all the supplies you need from the dollar store or craft store nearby for pennies.
Via Babble
What about that kid on your list? Want to bring a smile to their face at lunch on the first day of school? Add a cute note with paper stock and cereal to not only brighten their day but add a fun snack to their lunch. I'm sure the other kids will be envious of such an awesome mom!
Via Bee in our Bonnet
Maybe you have friends that are teachers and you want to send them into the new school year with a bit of pep in their step. Why not give them a cute First Day of School Survival Kit. You can incorporate any type of goodie in these cheap craft boxes that you wish. Band-aids, Candies, Paper Clips, Chap Stick, Nail Polish, Drink Mix packs, Crayons...whatever they may need, you can add and personalize each one.
Regardless if you know someone who is returning to school or not, enjoy the transition into the next phase of the year. So stop and smell the pencils, maybe grab a new planner, get a fresh box of crayons. Enjoy the transition into fall....for it is a great time of year.

DIY Project: It'll Be Curtains.... Part II

A few weeks back, I shared with you guys my amazing new curtains. Now, I finally get to show you how you can make your own curtains- with just a few easy items!
  1. Curtain Rod - If you don't have a curtain rod , you can find them pretty cheap (I found mine on clearance for $4).
  2. Clip Rings - These are going to be what holds your "curtain in place on the curtain rod.
  3. Clip Rings
  4. "Curtain" - You can use as shower curtain (like mine), a table cloth (like this gem), or any favorite fabric- ensure the item is easy to wash. **Measure your window ahead of time as sizes vary**
Assembly is quite easy. All you will need to do is hand your curtain rod and then use the clip hooks to hold your "curtain" in place. Make sure each clip is spaced out properly - to ensure that there is no "slouching", like in the photo below!

Finished product!
And, there you have it. A very easy and cheap DIY way to have curtains without the hefty price.

DIY Project: It'll Be Curtains

My Instagram
I have been meaning to put curtain up in my kitchen/dining room area in mi casa. It has been quite a time for me to find colors that I want that match my lime/salsa colored kitchen. Most of the colors/patterns just were not 'me'. My style is a bit retro modern (think 70's designs updated for today).
I have found so many great bloggers that made their own DIY curtains, that I could not poass up an opportunity to do it myself! So, I did!! Using these brushed-nickel looking clips and a silver curtain rod on clearance for $4.50, I was able to make curtains from yes, a shower curtain.

I will post pics soon of the finished product- and the tour of our place!

Found a New Fabric

My Instagram
Happy Sunday folks! I was lucky enough to find the best fabric at my local fabric store on sale last weekend. I am planning on using her for an upcoming scarf project I wanted to attempt. Isn't she pretty? I call her bohemian sass! She is a sheer navy colored fabric with paisley designs. Very pretty. Any ideas on what to make the rest of her into???

DIY Project: Anthro Necklace

My Instagram
I love Anthropologie - but not the prices! So, I always try to find a way to make my own items if i an - especially if I make them cheaper than I can buy them. One of my favorite bloggers I follow is Of Pinks and Fairytales and she made this amazing Anthro Necklace I had been eyeballing not too long ago. Well, I wanted to make my own- and one that would work with some new orange shirts I purchased.
I went to Hobby Lobby and picked up the following items:
  • 1 strand beads- this is my main color selection (similar) $4.00
  • 1 silver connector necklace - my other half accent of the piece (similar) $4.00
  • total project cost: $8.00
I used some spare parts from my chain remaining from spare chain I had leftover from the owl necklace - and using a claw clasp, it finally came together and I absolutely love it. What do you think?

Instagram!

I know I shared with you guys here that I was a fan of Instagram. I have to say, I am amused. I now take photos of random objects around the house to see how I can edit them to make them look more artistic.

A Few of My NEW Favorite Things

I always like finding something new that I just fall for. Something unexpected, but yet very cool. I went to my favorite store, Tarjay and found these super cute Gold Leaves Drop Earrings from their new The Webster at Target collection. I had spotted them in my May 2012 issue of People Style Watch (under Bohemian Chic article) and knew I wanted them. And, yes, those fantastic baubles were $15.

From Blogger In The Know

And some inspiration - found at Hobby Lobby - that inspired me (the luck bracelet) to make a new bracelet. As soon as I went home, I dashed to my jewelry tool box and got to work. I have to say how proud I am of this bracelet- as this is a new project for me. I had frog legs pick up the coordinating stones to accent my charms. I really am proud of this project. I picked out charms that would have some sort of meaning between Frog Legs and I.

I absolutely love creating new things - and this bracelet is no exception. I loved the blue accented stones that bring the "pop" factor to the charms.

While I was picking up the charms, I found the cutest owl (and if you know me, you know I LOVE love love owls) so I could not resist picking him up. And, since I had leftover blue accent jewels, I created a necklace to go with my new bracelet. I am excited to be wearing it to work today.  He was super easy to make (5 leftover blue jewels, 1 pearl, 4 silver accents, spare link from my bracelet, and a small chain from another project). I call him "owl in the moonlight".

So, do you have any new things you love?

Earth Day Activities Part II

Earth Day, being this past Saturday, got me thinking about ways to be able to become a lot more friendly to the planet. I was Pinning a few ideas on Pinterest last week and came across a few DIY projects that would be earth-friendly as well as being very low moolah to create!

My first project-and one I have been meaning to create- is DIY Homemade Laundry Detergent. I had never attempted to create my own soap of any kind and now I am actually glad I did. Not only did I learn a cheap alternative to purchasing the expensive brand I typically get, I can now make my own with very easy to get natural ingredients. This detergent is powered. If you prefer to have a liquid, I would suggest my next project (feel free to scroll down and skip this DIY idea).
What you will need is the following:
1Cup Borax 1Cup Super Washing Soda
1Bar Fels-Naptha
1/2 Tub Oxiclean (optional- but helps with tough stains)
Cheese Grater
Measuring Cup
Lg Container to store your product
First, you will need to grate the Fels-Naptha bar down until it looks like grated parmesan cheese- the finer grater side is the best I have found. The finer the better - as it is better mixed when it comes to actually using it in the washing machine.
This will take a long time....and yes, you will get tired. It is always nice to have a friend step in and assist (thank you Frog Legs, my tired arms appreciated the break). It is not necessary to have an assistant, but it is nice!
If you do it all by yourself (like I did for the second bar - i wanted a double amount), you will get buff arms - no gym membership required!!
After the bar is grated, you will need to add in the Borax, Washing Soda and Oxiclean (optional). I wanted to make a double batch, so I did two cups of the Borax and Washing Soda, another bar of the soap and the entire mini tub of Oxiclean.
When everything was all said and done, it made almost a full pitcher full - double batch. My aunt made the same detergent (single batch to try it out for herself before making double, but she has since told me she will be making another since it has worked so well on my cousins' tough laundry stains).

The second DIY Laundry detergent I made was a liquid version- no grate required!! This one was super easy. All you need are the following ingredients:
3 Tablespoons Borax
3 Tablespoons Super Washing Soda
2 Tablespoons Dish Soap (I used Palmolive Citrus Scent - since I wanted a better smell)
4 Cups HOT water - IMPORTANT that it is boiling
1 Large Container (for storage)
Measuring Cup
Measuring Spoons
Combine the Borax, Washing Soda and Dish Soap in the container. Add 4 Cups of hot boiling water. Stir well. There will be a few bubbles. That is A-OK! This will not make a lot...so I used 3 times the amount for an entire pitcher (free!since I had that spare in storage).
And there is the finished product! I could have added more but I figured this would be enough product to get me started. And, look at how much dish soap I have left. Now I can use that for more laundry detergent or dishes.

I am sure you are asking why I choose to make both liquid and powered version of laundry detergent. Simply, I wanted to use the liquid for my more delicate clothing. I know for some of my delicates, they do not like as hard detergents as some of my more cotton pieces, so that is why I wanted to make both! You do not have to make both - however, they are both quite cheap to make and you will have a lot left over to make additional batches.

My final DIY project from this weekend was DIY Homemade Fabric Softner. This product yields a lot of leftovers so if you use your fabric softner container, you may need an additional container for extras. For this DIY, you will need the following:
6 Cups of HOT water
3 Cups White Vinegar
2 Cups Scented Hair Conditioner (optional - but I use it for the great scent!)
Large Container for Storage
Funnel - helps with transition to final containers (optional)

All you need to do is combine all ingredients into a large container - and stir well. It may not look pretty but it works so well. Now, I will say you are most certainly able to omit the conditioner and just use the basics but $1 for the conditioner I purchased at the Dollar Store, my fabric softner smells amazing!! And, with 2 oz left over, I have conditioner to use in the shower.
Final product...and it smells amazing! I had a leftover orange juice container for the leftover product. Overall, the conditioner really helps the strong scent of the vinegar. However, do not fear, the smell of the vinegar will not come through onto your fresh clean clothes!!

Hope you have enjoyed my DIY projects. Have you done any of these? Tell me...what did you think? How did yours turn out??
